BoilerKey to be replaced with simpler two-factor login process

BoilerKey, the two-factor authentication login service for many online tools and services, will be replaced this summer with a simplified login process.

The new login process eliminates the need for users to enter “pin, push” as their passcode. Instead, users will log in using their career account username and password.

The new login will continue to require users to authenticate their request using the Duo Mobile app or a hardware token. The use of two-factor authentication protects your accounts by requiring something you know (password) plus something you have with you (like Duo Mobile on your smartphone) to prevent someone from logging in with only your password.

The replacement of BoilerKey is scheduled for June 27, 2023. Purdue information Technology asks that the following steps be taken now to ensure a smooth transition to the new login service:

ALL CURRENT BOILERKEY USERS:
  • Confirm that you know your current Purdue career account name and password. If you do not know your password, or would like to reset it, go to boilerbot.purdue.edu and follow the prompts. Please do so by June 23.
  • If you have not registered your phone number for self-recovery, set it up now.
IF YOU MAINTAIN A WEBSITE, KNOWLEDGE ARTICLES OR SYLLABUS THAT REFERENCES BOILERKEY:
  • Inventory references you have in your documentation to the word “BoilerKey,” and the steps required for device registration and login.
  • Prepare new documentation replacing the word “BoilerKey” with “login” or Purdue login. Eliminate references to “PIN,push” and refer to password instead.
IF YOU OWN AN IT SERVICE THAT CURRENTLY USES BOILERKEY FOR SINGLE SIGN ON:
  • Do the same items listed above for website/knowledge owners.
  • You do not need to change any of your SSO integration settings in preparation for the changes at the end of June. More information will be made available in the coming weeks to help prepare for the transition.
