Purdue IT fall updates

News for this semester include changes to Microsoft SMS/Voice authentication, VPN login and Zoom multifactor authentication.

Microsoft MFA SMS/Voice authentication

As part of an industry-wide push toward stronger account security, Microsoft is retiring native text message (SMS) and phone call (voice) verification. After Nov. 16, you will no longer be able to confirm your login and access Purdue resources by receiving a text message or phone call.

To comply with Microsoft's changes and protect university accounts against modern security threats like phone number spoofing and message interception, Purdue IT is phasing out SMS/Voice verification methods over the Fall 2026 semester.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) login

In the coming weeks, users who connect to Purdue VPN will notice some enhancements to the login flow. Instead of entering a username and password directly into the Cisco Secure Client, users will be directed to the web-based process used for Purdue Single Sign-On (SSO). This will not impact VPN sessions that are open when the change is implemented. Users will notice the change the next time they connect to the VPN.

Zoom MFA

At the end of October, Zoom will no longer support “Work Email” as a multifactor authentication (MFA) method. After this change, users should sign in to Zoom using Purdue Single Sign-On (SSO).
