New online proctoring tool offered for summer session
Purdue signed a contract on May 13 to make the Examity online proctoring service available for courses starting with the 2020 summer term.
Examity, which was selected after a review of testing options, is available for summer courses and will be fully implemented within the Brightspace learning management system later this summer. Students who use the service will be required to pay a fee per exam, similar to proctoring services currently offered by Purdue. Courses interested in using Examity this summer should contact tlt@purdue.edu.
"After reviewing all of the options, Examity was the clear choice because it gives instructors flexibility in how they proctor exams, and its integration with Brightspace makes it easily available to anyone who needs to use it,” says Natalie Carroll, a professor agricultural sciences education and communication, who served on the review team .
Examity gives instructors the option of using an automated proctoring session – which uses machine learning and algorithms to detect potential violations – and live proctoring. Instructors will be able to enable proctoring on an exam-by-exam basis, and testing session reports will be available to instructors inside Brightspace.
Available proctoring tools

- Respondus Lockdown browser: A web-application that “locks” a user’s web browser during exam to limit their ability to use search engines, chat or other functions that could affect academic integrity. This tool is ideal for low stakes assessments, as it comes with no extra cost to students. Tool also stops applications that may screenshot or print your exams.
- Respondus monitor: Used in conjunction with Respondus Lockdown Browser, this web-application uses a web-camera and microphone to record while a student takes the exam. This tool is a free option for low or high stakes assessments - but is best used by smaller courses as the instructor will need to check all flagged issues.
- Examity: Offers multiple levels of service, including live proctoring, but requires a per-use fee. Examity works well for large-enrollment courses that need identity verification for high-stake assessments. Instructors should be aware that there is a cost to use Examity, and may want to consider other free proctoring options. Best practices is that courses using Examity should include detailed information about costs to students in its syllabus letter.
