SAS 9.2 Renewal Instructions
Note: The following information is intended as instruction for renewing licensing files on currently installed SAS software and is NOT intended as instruction for initial installation, upgrade, or re-installation of SAS software.
- If you currently have a version of SAS other than 9.2 installed on your computer or currently have SAS installed on a non-Windows platform computer, please send an email to ITaP-Licensing@purdue.edu to receive additional instructions. Please provide the following information:
- State in the subject line "Please Provide Additional SAS License Renewal Instructions"
- List your full name and Purdue username
- List the currently installed SAS version
- List the computing platform (Unix,AIX,WindowsXP) and if the machine is 32 or 64 bit
- Save whichever of the files attached to your email is appropriate to the nature of your use of SAS:
- TR_92_SID32.txt if predominantly for academic and "teaching and research" (TR) activities
- IN_92_SID32.txt if principally for "internal" (IN) administrative work at Purdue University
For a "teaching and research" SAS installation, for example, you might copy/save/click&drag the TR_92_SID32.txt file to your My Documents folder.
- Follow the directions below to update your SAS license from the new SID (SAS Installation Data). An expanded version of the following renewal instructions is available at http://support.sas.com/documentation/installcenter/
There are two methods for renewing your SAS software:
- End User Role: Renewing SAS Software
Note: The Renew SAS Software tool can be used to update Personal images only. For Client images, the Administrator renews your SAS software by running the update from the SAS Administrator Wizard's Maintenance Mode.
If you already have SAS software installed, the Renew SAS Software utility applies SAS Installation Data. From the Start menu, click Programs --> SAS --> SAS 9.2 License Renewal & Utilities --> Renew SAS Software
Vista Note: To start the Renew SAS Software utility on Windows Vista, follow these steps:
- Select All Programs --> SAS --> SAS 9.2 License Renewal & Utilities
- Right-click Renew SAS Software
- Select Run As Administrator
- In the User Access Control dialog box, select Allow
- Continue by navigating through the SAS renewal dialog boxes
If the Renew SAS Software tool is not available on your Start menu, then Open Windows Explorer and go to this directory:
c:\Program Files\SASFoundation\9.2\core\sasinst\sasrenew
Double-click on sasrenew.exe to start the Renew SAS Software tool.As the text at the top of the Renew SAS Software window indicates, there are two steps in renewing your SAS software:
- Select a SAS Installation Data File
- Specify product location
Click Next to advance through the steps.
Successful License Renewal
When you complete the license renewal process successfully, the SAS log displays a new SAS 9.2 8-digit site number, which is different from your site number for previous SAS versions. There should be no specific Warnings concerning expirations dates withing the initial Log window if the license file has been properly renewed.
- Administrator Role: Updating SAS Installation Data (most persons at Purdue will NOT use this method)
If you already have a SAS Software Depot on a file server that contains a SAS image for Client Users (Admin-Client) or Personal Users (Admin-Personal), you can update the SAS installation data file (SID file) on the file server.
Note: This SAS image is created during the installation process when you select Client Users or Personal Users from the SAS Deployment Wizard window.
Personal Users (Admin-Personal)
Typically, the SAS installation data file for Admin-Personal images is for Windows Workstation operating systems, not for Windows Server operating systems.
For an Admin-Personal image, you must have write-access on the file server where the SAS Software Depot is located. Copy the new SAS installation data file to the sid_files directory on the file server. Users who install SAS from the file server should specify the new SID file when the SAS Deployment Wizard prompts for the SAS installation data file.
In addition, you can update the Personal SAS installation on the machine on which it is installed, as described above in "End User Role: Renewing SAS Software."
Client Users (Admin-Client)
Typically, the SAS installation data file for Admin-Client images is for Windows Workstation operating systems, not for Windows Server operating systems.
For an Admin-Client image, run the Renew SAS Software utility from a machine where a Client SAS installation was performed. You must log on to this machine with a userid that has write-access to the remote file server where the SAS Software Depot for the Admin-Client image is located.
To run the Renew SAS Software utility, double-click on sasrenew.exe in the following directory on the local machine:
{SASHOME}\SASFoundation\9.2\core\sasinst\sasrenew
{SASHOME} is the directory that was selected for installing all SAS products. The default {SASHOME} path is C:\Program Files\SAS.After you start the Renew SAS Software utility, proceed as described above in "End User Role: Renewing SAS Software" with the following two changes in the Step 2, "Specify product location" dialog:
- Clear the "Same as above" check box.
- In the "Folder where SAS was installed" field, type or browse to the sasroot directory in the SAS Software Depot for the Admin-Client image on the file server where sas.exe is located. This will be the Products\sasinstall__{version and specific Client Server}\sas directory in the Admin-Client image.
The "Folder for SAS config file" field will typically default to the correct path on the local c:\ drive of the system where you are running the Renew SAS Software utility, but you should verify the path and correct it if necessary.
Successful License Renewal
When you complete the license renewal process successfully, the SAS log displays a new SAS 9.2 8-digit site number, which is different from your site number for previous SAS versions.
NOTE: If you continue to see one of the following two warnings within the initial Log window, then your license file has not been properly renewed/updated:
WARNING: Your system is scheduled to expire on February 28, 2012, which is XX days from now. The SAS System will no longer function on or after that date. Please contact your SAS Installation Representative to obtain your updated SAS Installation Data (SID) file, which includes SETINIT information.
WARNING: The Base Product product with which Session Manager is associated will be expiring soon, and is currently in warning mode to indicate this upcoming expiration. Please run PROC SETINIT to obtain more information on your warning period. Display of UTF8 encoded data is not fully supported by the SAS Display Manager System.
