New secure storage solution for sensitive and restricted data storage

Effective August 4, 2025, SharePoint Restricted Data Storage (SPRDS) will be the designated location for storage of restricted data within the Purdue Microsoft 365 tenant, allowing a dedicated and more secure space to store data. This applies to faculty and staff across the Purdue system – West Lafayette, Indianapolis, Purdue Fort Wayne and Purdue Northwest. Graduate students with a need for restricted data storage should contact their faculty sponsor to coordinate access. IMPORTANT: This storage does not comply with security regulations to store export controlled data or controlled unclassified information (CUI).

Individual researchers and/or departments may request the creation of a SPRDS site for storage of restricted data. When requesting a SPRDS site, the Principal Investigator (PI) or department representative will confirm agreement with an End User Agreement (EUA). The EUA will provide information for maintaining security of the data and outline the responsibilities of the owner of the SPRDS site.

These sites will contain two document libraries:

  • “Purdue Only” document libraries will automatically apply the sensitivity label “Restricted Data – Purdue Only” to all files added to the library. This sensitivity label will restrict access to only those that have been granted access to the file and have access to PWL M365 tenant.
  • “Purdue and External” document libraries will automatically apply the sensitivity label “Restricted Data – Purdue and External” to all files added to the library. This sensitivity label will also restrict access to only those that have been granted access but will also allow for external individuals to be granted temporary access via a two-factor authentication process where they will be emailed a validation code to gain access to the file.

To request a SharePoint Restricted Data Storage site, please proceed to the SharePoint Restricted Data Storage Portal.
